To conclude their Civil Rights Unit—focused on the U.S. justice system and the pursuit of social change—8th grade CMS students participated in a mock trial experience. They examined the landmark case New York Times v. Sullivan, debating whether the Supreme Court’s ruling should be upheld or overturned. In preparation, students researched related libel cases to support their arguments and respond to challenging questions. During the mock trial, they took on the role of Supreme Court justices, engaging in thoughtful analysis and discussion. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of civil rights, free speech, and the judicial process, while also building their skills in research, critical thinking, and public speaking.
