CMS PTA WEEKLY UPDATE- MARCH 28, 2021
Did you know that Kitty Cone, a disability rights advocate, was the lead organizer and strategist of the “504 Sit-In,” a nearly four week long protest in 1977 at the San Francisco office of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare? The sit-in was intended to pressure Secretary Joseph A. Califano, Jr to sign regulations that would implement Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This act paved the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that was passed in 1990. Click here to read more about Kitty Cone!
Special shout-out to Rosie Curtis- CMS parent, artist, and all-around amazing person- for her beautiful speech calling us to work together with love and compassion at the “Stop Asian Hate” peaceful gathering this past weekend.
Want to discuss these issues more with other CMS parents/guardians or just get more involved? Contact our CMS PTA DEI Committee reps at email@example.com.

5th to 6th GRADE TRANSITION
Beginning Monday, March 29th, CMS is asking all parents/guardians to log into PowerSchool to select your child’s 1) Music course for 6th grade and 2) World Language course for all three years of middle school. The deadline to make changes to course requests is Friday, April 9th; course request changes will not be permitted after April 9, 2021. Is your child making the transition from 8th to 9th grade? Or maybe you have a child already at Staples? Staples PTA needs your help! Staples PTA Nominating Committee is looking for parent volunteers for the 2021-22 school year. Bringing in new volunteers with fresh ideas is an annual goal so we have developed a brief survey to help parents who want to get involved find opportunities that best suit their talents, skills, and availability.
Don’t worry....completing the survey does not commit you to anything! A member of Staples Nominating Committee will be in touch to provide more information and discuss ways you can get involved. Click here to take the survey.
Check your email for an important message from the PTA Health and Wellness Committee re: Westport Together. You can view the letter here. There are so many wonderful resources available to us to help support our children’s social-emotional health.
Any questions? Reach out to our PTA Health and Wellness reps, Jenny McGuinness (firstname.lastname@example.org) and Kate Schwartz (email@example.com).
